Final grade calculator: what do I need on my final?
Enter your current grade, how much the final (or everything left) is worth, and the grade you want. The formula is: needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the remaining weight as a decimal. For example, with 78% now, a final worth 40% and a target of 80%, you need 83% on the final.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the grade I need on my final exam?
Needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final’s weight as a decimal. Example: you have 78%, the final is worth 40%, and you want 80%. Needed = (80 − 78 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 83%.
What if my grade so far only covers part of the course?
Use the weight that’s still to come instead of just the final. If 55% of the course is graded at 81% and you want 85%, you need (85 − 81 × 0.55) ÷ 0.45 ≈ 89.9% on the remaining 45%.
What does it mean if I need more than 100%?
The target is out of reach with the weight that’s left, even with a perfect score. Try a lower target, or check whether there’s bonus credit or a drop-the-lowest rule in your syllabus.
What if I need 0% or less?
You’ve already locked in that grade: even a zero on what’s left keeps you at or above your target.
Does this work for drop-the-lowest rules or participation?
This calculator handles the common case. Syllabase handles the rest automatically: best-N-of-M groups, drop-the-lowest, participation graded from attendance, and your school’s real GPA scale.
